Culture and heritage in Marseille
France’s oldest city, Massalia was founded in the 6th century BC, and its position as a gateway to the Mediterranean has made it a place of exchange and cultural melting pot. Today, some 111 neighborhoods stretch around the Old Port, from Estaque, with its breathtaking views over the harbor, to the small southern ports that open onto the calanques.
Marseille is represented by many symbols, and although the OM club is the city’s emblem, the Phocaean city is known for its famous Marseille soap, which to be recognized as “real” must contain exactly 72% olive oil. But even if this green cube makes the city famous, Provence doesn’t stop there. Other symbols, such as the santons, small terracotta figurines, represent all the local craftsmanship and know-how of the south.
Its culinary specialities are numerous, but include Pastis, bouillabaisse, aïoli, navettes… and pizza (the inventor of the pizza truck was from Marseille!).
