Midsummer’s Day: traditions and sacred fire

Among Marseille’s most symbolic festivities, the Fête de la Saint-Jean occupies a special place.

Every year at the end of June, a popular festival inherited from pagan and Provençal traditions lights up Marseille. On the Old Port or in the hilltop districts, fire is at the heart of the celebration: it symbolizes light, renewal and unity. From late afternoon onwards, families flock to enjoy the entertainment: folk dances, Occitan music, street shows and parades in traditional costumes.

When the sun goes down, a huge bonfire is lit, attracting hundreds of amazed gazes. The atmosphere is festive, warm, almost magical. People sing, dance and share. It’s a rare moment when Marseille vibrates in unison, between past and present, tradition and popular celebration.

Practical info :

  • Distance: 17.3 kilometers from our campsite
  • Time: from 6 p.m. to enjoy the entertainment
  • Atmosphere: family-friendly, festive, rooted in tradition
  • Don’t miss: the lighting of the pyre at sunset

La Fiesta des Suds: the sound of the world in the heart of Marseille

Among Marseille’s festivals, the Fiesta des Suds is undoubtedly the city’s most vibrant.

Created in 1992, every autumn it transforms the Docks des Suds into a global musical crossroads. Artists from the four corners of the globe perform here. Dancing under the spotlights, strolling between food trucks and art installations, you’re sure to be thrilled by the eclectic audience.

Much more than just a festival, it’s a hymn to diversity, a living manifesto of the Marseilles spirit. Each edition is a total celebration, generous and terribly contagious.

Carnaval de Marseille: the city in grand parade mode

Colorful, noisy, joyful: Carnival is undoubtedly one of Marseille’s most popular and eagerly-awaited springtime celebrations.

Every year, the city’s streets are transformed into a giant stage where beautiful floats, crazy brass bands, costumed schools and committed associations march past. More than just a procession, the Carnaval de Marseille also carries a message: each edition is organized around a civic theme such as ecology, solidarity or human rights, which nourishes the creations, workshops and collective imagination.

The atmosphere is friendly, inclusive and generous. We come in costume, with family or friends, to sing, dance, parade and, above all, celebrate a city proud of its diversity and creative energy.
