If you are a wine lover, curious about the terroir, or simply in love with Provence, Cassis is a must-see destination. While the town charms visitors with its sun-drenched streets and spectacular landscapes, it also hides a more discreet treasure: an exceptional vineyard facing the Mediterranean.
The Cassis wine Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) dates back to 1936, making it the oldest terroir in Provence. Today, the Cassis AOC has 12 wine estates, nestled between the sea and the cliffs, which mainly produce white wines renowned for their finesse and freshness. It is for this unique wine-growing heritage that we invite you to discover Cassis from a different angle, that of its terroir.
The origins of Cassis wine
The history of Cassis wine dates back more than 2,600 years. At the time of the founding of Marseille, the Phocaeans introduced the first vines to the bay of Cassis. Vine cultivation was then continued by the Romans, who shipped the wine by sea.
The first wine estate dates back to 1381 and is now known as Clos Sainte Magdeleine, located just twenty minutes from the campsite.
The unique characteristics of Cassis wine
What makes Cassis wines unique is their exceptional geographical location, between the sea and the mountains. Two major elements shape their identity:
- The Mediterranean Sea and sea winds, which bring freshness and subtle marine notes.
- The agricultural limestone soils and ochre rock of Cap Canaille, which give the wines a beautiful minerality.
Food and wine pairings: the versatility of the Cassis AOC
Cassis wines offer a rich array of aromas, making them ideal for many culinary pairings.
- White Cassis wines are the perfect accompaniment to grilled fish or fish in sauce, shellfish and crustaceans, and of course bouillabaisse, the emblem of Provençal cuisine.
- The fresh and fruity rosés and reds go very well with salads, grilled meats and spicy dishes.
