Routes and itineraries for hiking in the calanques of Cassis
You can leave from downtown Cassis, but you can also park near the Port Miou cove, in the Presqu’île parking lot or in the Bestouan parking lot.
The itinerary begins at the Port Miou cove and takes in three beautiful coves in succession: Port Miou, Port Pin and En-Vau. You’ll need 3 hours’ walking in all: 1h30 on the outward journey and 1h30 on the return, to complete the 12 km round trip.
If you’re looking for a shorter hike, stop off at the Port-Pin calanque, which will cut your walking time in half.
With a stroller or very young children, simply walk along the Port-Miou cove to admire the countless sailboats moored there, then turn around before heading off along the paths.
If you go as far as Port-Pin, the path takes you to the bottom of the calanque: we advise you to bring a bathing suit, as swimming is tempting!
Safety tips
Between Port-Miou and Port-Pin, it’s advisable to take the new GR 98-51 if you don’t have good shoes or if you’re in the company of young children: the old path offers even more beautiful views, but also has slippery sections that have become dangerous.
The En-Vau cove is only accessible on foot or by boat. If you wish to continue past this third calanque, be prepared for a much more technical walk.
Before hiking in the calanques of Cassis, make sure you are aware of any restrictions on access, which are frequent in summer due to the risk of fire.
Above all, don’t make the mistake of hiking in flip-flops or sandals: the stone has become slippery from repeated use, and the cliff faces are very steep, often vertiginous.
Check the weather forecast before setting off, as hiking in the calanques can be very dangerous if the mistral is blowing.
Finally, remember to bring plenty of water, protect your head from the sun and apply sunscreen. The calanques are particularly dry and sunny. There are no shade points or water supplies.
With children, choose the first calanques, or even the first two, depending on age.
