A historic international race
Born in 1979 under the impetus of André Giraud, the Marseille-Cassis race began with just 700 participants. In just over forty years, it has established itself as one of the great classics of road racing, attracting nearly 20,000 runners to each edition. Its reputation extends far beyond regional borders: in 2024, no fewer than 64 nationalities were represented on the starting line.
This enthusiasm can be explained as much by the beauty of the course as by the festive spirit that surrounds the event. High-level athletes run alongside amateurs who come for the pleasure of running, from young adults to veterans over 80. This diversity makes Marseille-Cassis an intergenerational and multicultural event, where performance, solidarity and conviviality come together.
Listed on the official calendar of the Fédération Française d’Athlétisme (French Athletics Federation) and certified at international level, the event enjoys worldwide recognition. Today, it is considered a must for many running enthusiasts, attracted as much by the sporting challenge as by the unique atmosphere along the route.
The route: a sporting challenge and exceptional scenery
If Marseille-Cassis is such a popular race, it’s above all for its unique route. From the very first kilometers, runners leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and head for the Col de la Gineste, a demanding climb that tests everyone’s endurance and determination. But the reward is as good as the effort: a beautiful view of the Mediterranean and the surrounding hills.
The route then continues for twelve kilometers through the heart of the Parc national des Calanques, an exceptional natural site that is listed and protected. The white cliffs, fragrant garrigue and panoramic sea views open onto a grandiose backdrop that contributes to the legend of the event. Running in such an environment is a rare experience, which also encourages respect for biodiversity: sorting zones are set up at refreshment points to reduce the race’s ecological impact.
The finish in Cassis, on the Avenue des Albizzi, remains an unforgettable moment. Surrounded by the vineyards of Provence, the participants cross the finish line to the cheers of the public and the festive music of the village. For spectators and companions alike, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a day out in the open air and discover the richness of the Provencal countryside between Marseille, Aubagne and Cassis.
