Want to take your time and admire the changing light over the Provencal countryside? From our campsite in Aubagne near Marseille, there are several viewpoints from which you can watch the sun set in a variety of settings, between sea, town and nature.
Here are three places to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets in Provence.
The Garlaban Massif: a sunset in the colors of Provence
Dominating the Aubagne plain, the Garlaban massif rises to an altitude of 714 meters. This summit, made famous by Marcel Pagnol’s stories, offers a magnificent panorama of Provence. At the summit, an orientation table allows you to identify the various surrounding massifs, such as the Sainte-Baume or the Étoile massif. Hiking trails, accessible from Aubagne, zigzag through garrigue scented with thyme and rosemary, leading to incredible viewpoints.
Our verdict: watching the sun set from the summit of Garlaban is an unforgettable experience. The warm hues of the setting sun set the sky ablaze, creating a natural spectacle. It’s a moment of calm and contemplation, ideal for those who love nature and photography.

Esplanade du J4: a sunset in the heart of Marseille
Located between sky, sea and culture, the Esplanade du J4 is one of the best urban spots to watch the sunset in Marseille. Bordered by the Mucem and Fort Saint-Jean, it literally plunges into the Mediterranean, offering a magnificent panorama of the open sea, the Vieux-Port and the silhouette of the Palais du Pharo opposite.
At dusk, the sky turns pink, orange and purple: a beautiful sight to behold. To extend the experience, take the walkway of Fort Saint-Jean, perched above the water: it offers a 360° view of the sea, the port and the city’s new lights.
Our verdict: it’s a magical place, especially at the end of the day. For a romantic stroll, a photo outing or simply in search of peace and quiet, the Esplanade du J4 combines the raw beauty of the sea with the architectural elegance of the Mucem. We love to come here in the late afternoon, sit on the steps or on a bench, and watch the sun slowly disappear behind the horizon. A real favorite!

Cap Canaille: a breathtaking sunset over the Mediterranean
Between Cassis and La Ciotat, Cap Canaille rises proudly above the Mediterranean. At 394 metres above sea level, it is the highest maritime cliff in Europe. Accessible via the Route des Crêtes, this natural site offers a magnificent panorama of the calanques, the blue waters and the immensity of the open sea.
In the golden hour, the sandstone and clay cliffs take on beautiful hues of red, orange and ochre, contrasting magnificently with the deep blue of the sea. The spectacle is even more beautiful as you approach the shore: the boats become tiny, and the silence commands respect.
Our verdict: Cap Canaille is Provence in its raw state. You come here to feel very small in the face of nature’s grandeur. The sunsets here are simply breathtaking, almost unreal. If you love magnificent panoramas, this is a must-see. And for bikers, the Route des Crêtes itself is a pleasure in its own right, with its curves and viewpoints. A real gem!
