Marseille, just 20 minutes from the Aubagne campsite, is one of the most important port cities in the south of France. Marseille and the surrounding area have everything you need for a pleasant stay. With sandy beaches to lay your towel on, an important historical heritage not to be missed, magnificent natural sites to discover on foot or by bike, and a unique and delicious gastronomy, there are plenty of ideas and activities to choose from.
But have you ever thought of surfing in Marseille?

Surfing in Marseille

Marseille and the surrounding area have the particularity of offering beautiful waves that have nothing to envy those of the ocean. Their first surfers appeared around the 1980s.
Unlike the Atlantic coast, the Mediterranean coast allows surfers to enjoy the waves all day and all year round, without the inconvenience of tides, for example.
To go out and meet the swell, you need to be equipped. A neoprene wetsuit and a board, preferably a wide foam one, will do the trick. For beginners, it’s a good idea to ask about taking lessons, or to take advantage of a few days’ training to get started.
For the more experienced, all you have to do is discover the best spots to practice your favorite sport.

The best surf spots in and around Marseille

in Marseille

For great waves when the mistral starts blowing, the Huveaune sandy beach on Marseilles’ Prado is the place to be. Often renamed “Epluchures”, it is accessible to all levels. This spot is a must in Marseille.

in Sausset Les Pins

The Corniche beach in Sausset Les Pins offers good-quality waves. It’s a pebble beach, easy to get to, where it’s pleasant to jump in and catch a few waves.

in Martigues

When it’s windy and the waves are too intense, Plage du Verdon is a good compromise. This spot is located in the commune of La Couronne, in Martigues.
Also in the same area, discover the beach of Sainte Croix. This fine sandy beach is easy to access and remains an important spot for surfers in the region.

La 13ème vague, a surf school in Marseille

La 13ème vague offers a wide range of services to satisfy the needs of all types of surfers.
This Marseille-based surf school offers surf lessons for beginners and experts alike. From September to June, each course is held in one of the many spots between Marseille and the Côte Bleue. The school provides you with a neoprene wetsuit, foam board and HD camera so you can watch your progress.
If you’re not a fan of bigger waves, paddleboarding is for you. Yoga paddle, kid paddle, pilates paddle, paddle initiation or excursion, not forgetting the apéro sunset, there’s something for all tastes, ages and levels.
Are you an experienced surfer dreaming of a week’s surfcamp? Thanks to La 13ème vague, it’s possible. However, if your level doesn’t yet allow you to do so, there are courses for beginners and advanced surfers from age 7 upwards.

Who thought it wasn’t possible to go surfing in the Mediterranean?
