With its fascinating architecture and captivating exhibitions, the Mucem is a lively place where Mediterranean traditions meet and reinvent themselves.

The Mucem in Marseille, born from the meeting of cultures

The Mucem in Marseille was built in 2013, to coincide with the city’s designation as European Capital of Culture. The project was designed to create a space for reflection and sharing between Mediterranean peoples, and underlines the importance of the Mediterranean as a crossroads for historical, social and cultural exchanges. From the outset, the Mucem has been dedicated to collective memory.

Architecture at the crossroads of time, by Rudy Ricciotti

The architecture of the Mucem in Marseille is a masterpiece of contemporary design, imagined by architect Rudy Ricciotti, the ambassador of concrete. The building is distinguished by its bold style, blending modern materials such as concrete with subtle references to Mediterranean architectural traditions . The museum plays with space and light, creating an environment where you feel both inside and outside, a fluid space where the past blends with the present. The footbridge linking Mucem to Fort Saint-Jean is another example of this fusion: it embodies the connection between history and modernity.

Permanent exhibitions at Mucem, Marseilles

Several temporary exhibitions await you at the Mucem. Find out more.

“Mediterranean”, plurality of cultures

Mucem’s permanent exhibition, entitled “Méditerranées”, plunges you into the heart of the cultural diversities and imaginary worlds that shape the Mediterranean basin. To mark its 10th anniversary, the Mucem is unveiling the richness of its European and Mediterranean collections through this exhibition, which spans from Greco-Latin antiquity through the colonial period to the present day. The exhibition explores how museums, by showcasing ancient civilizations, have nurtured the idea of an idealized Mediterranean, built around the tales of Homer, Greek temples and great empires such as Rome and Palmyra. This exhibition, which is regularly renewed, is a living project that will evolve until 2030.

“Popular”: Mediterranean art and traditions

Mucem’s second permanent exhibition, entitled “Populaire”, invites visitors to discover the world of Mediterranean popular cultures. The exhibition brings together colorful costumes, farming tools, traditional musical instruments, everyday objects and many other items representative of popular life across the Mediterranean. It includes objects expected in a museum, such as paintings, ex-votos or icons, but also more surprising pieces, such as decorated beehive doors, which testify to the creativity of everyday life.
